The ghosts of the 2016-17 season seem to have revisited the Gunners when they were beaten by Stoke City 0-1 at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday. Despite a 77 per cent ball possession rate the Gunners were not able to find the back of the net. Alexandre Lacazette was impressive inside the box and should have perhaps been allowed a goal that had been controversially ruled off-side. The ex-Lyon forward could find company in Alexis Sanchez in the strikers’ zone when Arsene Wenger’s men visit Anfield on Sunday for their third Premier league clash. The Gunners defensive trio of Shkodran Mustafi, Monreal and Sead Kolasinac have looked lost so far and it looks almost certain that Laurent Koscielny (who is under suspension) will be back along with Per Mertesacker. So could Kieran Gibbs, Francis Coquelin and Jack Wilshere – one of them could be in for the Liverpool clash. Wenger may take a hard look at Mesut Ozil who really has been off-color of late. Granit Xhaka’s also has looked out of sorts this season and will have to do much better if he were to find a place in the starting XI. Welbeck, Bellerin, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey haven’t played badly at all but it’s the goals that Arsenal need at this hour from them.
Although Jurgen Klopp’s men have done much better than their Sunday rivals in the 2017-18 season, similar concern’s persists. 72 per cent possession and 16 shots on target in the Crystal Palace but only a solitary goal to show. Firmino, Sturridge and Mane seemed to lack imagination in the goal-mouth. Only Mohamed Salah looked impressive. The Egyptian striker who was so good in the match against Watford was introduced late in the Palace clash in place of Sturridge and Klopp would do well by giving more playing time for his £45 million import from Roma. The Liverpool back line that was hardly tested in the Crystal Palace match (just one shot on target) were all at sea against much powerfully built Watford forwards and the same could happen against players of the similar profile but much more skill and technique like Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez (if he were to play). The prolific Sanchez (who was virtually Arsenal’s lone performer last season with 30 goals) looks all set to return and should give some serious teeth to a indecisive Arsenal attack.
Liverpool is still without the services of Coutinho upfront, what with his tenure at Anfield under a cloud. But Mohamed Salah looks a good replacement for the live-wire Brazilian and along with Sadio Mane and Firmino should cause enough problems for the Gunners’ defense.
Arsenal’s only win in their last 5 outings with Liverpool came in April 2015. They haven’t won a single match since then and their last two had ended in defeats. Liverpool are the bookmaker’s favorites to win Sunday’s game at odds of 11/10. Odds for an Arsenal win are at 5/2 and for a draw it’s 12/5. Odds for a score line of 1-1 are interestingly at 6/1. The possibility of a drawn encounter with both sides scoring cannot be ruled out.
