Hull v Manchester United – Sunday 24th May 2015

Hull City are in a dire position right now. The Tigers are in 18th place, two points behind Newcastle and three points behind Sunderland. Hull have to displace at least one of those teams to survive.

A single point against Man Utd will not be enough. Steve Bruce has spoken hopefully ahead of the game: “Maybe Man U owe me something wrecking my knee, my hip, and my ankle”. However, Hull City has not managed that feat in 17 years.

There was a lot for Man Utd fans to like about their 1-1 home draw against rivals Arsenal last weekend. Man Utd played well in the first half and took the league with a magnificent volley from the creative midfield force that his Ander Herrera.

By the end of the game, Man Utd had maintained 57% possession against an Arsenal side that know how to keep the ball. Man Utd also created 12 total attempts on goal, which was more than Arsenal’s 43%. A concern, though, is that they could not kill the game off with Radamel Falcao or Robin van Persie.

Expectations

Hull played pretty well against Tottenham last week, but were undone by two goals in quick succession. A 2-0 outcome was the result of defensive mistakes and poor finishing. The Tigers had created 14 attempts on goal, only getting two on target.

A serious lack of creative midfielders and potent strikers leaves you doubting whether Hull trouble Man Utd. Alarmingly, they have only scored 33 goals, which is the second-fewest in the league.

Louis van Gaal does not relax for any games. He wants to win this game and finish above 70 points, regardless of how Arsenal play in their last two games. Although Man Utd have played well in midfield, they just cannot seem to get results with Falcao or van Persie. An appearance from James Wilson could change that.

Hull’s anaemic attack makes it unlikely for them to score against Man Utd.
