Both teams will rue their chances of earning three points against lesser oppositions, more so Manchester United who had the golden opportunity to do so against a relegation candidate like West Ham. Everton could not capitalize on a a Southampton low on morale and fatigued after a unfruitful journey back from a Europa League clash in Prague. The Everton frontal quartet of Lukaku, Bolasie, Barkley and Lennon have been worthless for quite some time and a statistic to support that is the measly number of just 6 goals the Toffees have got from their last 8 games. Three losses and three draws in that spell have seen them slip from a healthy fifth position in September to a struggling 7th now and the fear of moving a notch or two down the table in the coming few weeks seems a grim possibility.
Manchester United’s progress in the 2016-17 season, too, have been no less erratic. A thumping 4-0 win against Feyenoord at Old Trafford on Tuesday held a promise of an easy win over minions West Ham at the same venue On Sunday. But it was not to be. The Hammers managed to eke out a stubborn 1-1 draw from the favourites. United’s only noteworthy Premier League performance was a 4-1 win against Leicester City way back in September-mid. Since then it has been an uphill struggle consisting of 5 draws and one defeat and only dotted positively by a 1-3 win over Swansea City who are at the bottom of the table presently.
As for Everton, the back line of Coleman, Jagielka, Williams & co. have had serious issues of late and United have the wherewithal to drill holes into them with folks like Ibrahimovic, Rashford, Mata and Martial around. But then, for United, too, finishing has been a major problem. Post the big win against Leicester, their 7 Premier League outings since then have fetched them just half a dozen goals , a track record as bad as their opponents at Goodison park on Sunday.
Given the mediocre showing of both these outfits, bookmakers have gone in for odds that indicate an absolutely even-stevens affair, with a few giving a slight edge to the visitors. Both the teams need three points desperately just to prevent those below them from leaping over them on the points table. For 6th placed United, a win would be of even more significance considering that the patience of United fans and management with coach Jose Mourinho seems to be running really thin.
